Mamoutou Dembélé dit  « EMDE » grandit tout entouré de musique. Originaire de Sikasso au Mali, il débute à l’âge de 6 ans et de façon autodidacte, la musique, riche héritage culturel familial de parents griots, qui sont les orateurs et conservateurs de l’histoire de l’empire Mandingue, transmis de génération en génération.

Descendant Bwa (ou Bobo), groupe ethnique du Mali, il fusionne la langue bwa au bambara et joue d’instruments de différents âges et traditions. À ses débuts, il accompagne d’innombrables artistes lors de cérémonies, baptêmes, fêtes et mariages.

L’artiste créer ses propres instruments, dont son instrument à 15 cordes, quelque part entre la kora et le kamenlengoni (n’goni), qu’il nomme ‘’bahouinou’’ (les cordes d’un homme). Habiletés acquises de sa famille et de son entourage qu’il transmet à son tour aux plus jeunes, il fabrique plusieurs types d’instruments traditionnels maliens. Percussionniste, il joue également le tamani (talking drum), djembé, doun doun, calebasse, kariyan, filen, yabara et la guitare acoustique.

Ses sonorités nous transportent aux origines mêmes de la musique traditionnelle bwa. De par ses accords harmoniques rares et uniques, l’Afrique de l’ouest se dévoile en un style blues mandingue aux accents jazz, funk et reggae.

Il créer en 2008 son premier groupe et se produit depuis régulièrement aux côtés de musiciens talentueux qu’il rencontre aux 4 coins du monde et qui collaborent à ses projets. Il travaille actuellement à l’enregistrement de son troisième album. Composé de 5 musiciens (n’goni, batterie, calebasse, djembé, guitare électrique, guitare basse), son collectif propose un style musical blues mandingue.

Il lance son premier album intitulé ‘’Djeliya’’ fin octobre 2013. Rassemblant 10 titres, cet album lui vaut les éloges de la presse et du public, après quoi il sera reçu en entrevues par divers animateurs des réseaux de télévision et de radio nationaux tels que Africa Show, Top Étoile, Maïsha TV et sa musique diffusée sur les ondes d’ORTM Mali.

En novembre 2013, il est sélectionné parmi une dizaine de jeunes talents maliens à participer à l’enregistrement de l’album ‘Projet Africa Express’, enregistré au légendaire studio Bogolan de Bamako. Son deuxième album ‘’Dasio’’, qui compte 12 titres, est lancé en mai 2018. Avec son talent incomparable, EMDE entreprendra ensuite une série de projets et concerts qui le mèneront en Côte d’Ivoire, au Ghana, en Nouvelle-Guinée, au Sénégal, au Burkina Faso, en France, en Belgique et au Canada, où il s’établira en juin 2018 pour le développement de sa carrière internationale.

Seulement 10 mois après son intégration à la scène musicale Montréalaise et dans le cadre de sa participation au concours annuel  »Les Syli d’Or » des productions Nuits d’Afrique, producteur du plus grand festival de musique africaine en amérique du nord, EMDE est nommé lauréat 2019 des prix Syli d’Or de la musique du monde, Coup de coeur CAM du Conseil des Arts de Montréal et du prix américain AfroPop Worldwide.

Il travaille actuellement sur divers projets de collaborations internationales et à la production de son troisième album.

Mamoutou Dembele, known as « EMDE » , is a multi-instrumentalist artist that grew up surrounded by music.

Native of Sikasso in Mali, West Africa, he started playing music at age 6 as a rich family cultural heritage of griot parents, who are the speakers and curators of the Mandingo Empire’s history, passed down from generation to generation, from father to son.

As a Bwa (or Bobo) descendant, an ethnic group of Mali, he sings in bwa and bambara languages and plays instruments of various ages and traditions. At his debuts, he has accompanied countless artists at ceremonies, baptisms, parties, and weddings.

The artist creates his own instruments, including his 15-string instrument, somewhere between the kora and kamelengoni (n’goni), which he calls  » bahouinou  » (the strings of a man).

Acquired skills from his entourage that he in his turn transmits to the youngest, he builds several types of traditional Malian instruments. He also plays tamani, djembe, dun dun drums, calabash, yabara and acoustic guitar.

His sound takes us to the very origins of traditional bwa music. With its rare and unique harmonies, West Africa unveils in a Mandingo blues style tinted with funk, jazz and reggae accents.

He created his first group in 2008. To this day, he regularly performs with his band and alongside amazingly talented musicians he meets all over the world that collaborate on his projects. He is currently working on his 3rd album. Composed of 5 musicians, his collective offers a Mandingo blues musical style.

He launched his first album called ‘’Djeliya’’ late October 2013. Gathering 10 titles, this album earned him the praise of the press and public, following which he will be interviewed by various leaders of the national television and radio networks such as Africa Show, Top Etoile, Maisha TV and its music broadcasted on ORTM Mali. His second album ‘’Dasio’’, counting 12 titles, was released in May 2018.

In November 2013, he was selected by a dozen young Malian talents in order to participate in the recording of the album ‘’Africa Express Project’’, recorded at the legendary Bogolan studio in Bamako.

With his incomparable talent, EMDE will undertake a series of projects and concerts taking him to Ivory Coast, Ghana, New Guinea, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Belgium, France and Canada, where he will settle in June 2018 for the development of his international career.

Only 10 months after his integration to the Montreal music scene and as part of his participation in the annual world music contest « Les Syli d’Or » presented by Nuits d’Afrique productions, producer of the largest African music festival in North America, EMDE is named 2019 winner of the  »Syli d’Or » World Music Awards, Coup de Coeur CAM from the Montreal Arts Council and the American AfroPop Worldwide Award.

He is currently working on various projects of international collaborations and the production of his third album.
